Here at Intelius we collect public records and publicly available information to be included in our reports. This article gives a summary of these sources as well as details on how current the data may be.
Sources of Public Information
We provide information based on two types of public sources:
Public record consists of information collected and maintained by local, state and federal courts and government offices. Examples include:
- Birth, death, marriage and divorce records
- Real estate records
- Lien filings
- Business entity filings
- Lawsuit information
- Court dockets and court decisions
- Criminal records and sex offender registries
Publicly available information is generated by individuals, and is different from public record. It is not controlled by any offices or institutions and only updated when individuals change the information themselves at the source. Examples include:
- Social media accounts
- Email accounts
- Registering for store memberships
- Event ticket purchases
- Delivery services
- Published telephone number directories
- Information contained in newspapers and magazines
Currency of Data
Intelius accesses a variety of different public records and publicly available information from our data partners. Sometimes, these partners can be slow to update. We are as current as they are but some of the updates are out of our immediate control.
Updating Public Record
Intelius does not have the ability to change or delete any information as we only collect information that is currently available from the sources outlined above.
To remove old or inaccurate information from our database, we recommend submitting an Opt Out Request. This will remove your entire profile in our database but it will not alter or delete the actual source of the record.
